Daily life on board a whaling vessel combined long periods of relative boredom—days of sailing to reach the whaling grounds left many of the crew with abundant leisure time—with frenetic, brutal, periods in which a whale was hunted, chased, killed and slaughtered over the course of a few days. The daily routine for the crew of the Eunice H. Adams' 1887 voyage was more strenuous and unpleasant than many because the ship was damaged less than two months out of port and sprung leaks that required the crew to constantly manage bilge pumps for an entire year.
