Outfitting Sheets

Outfitting sheets recorded supplies purchased from the ship by members of the crew. Crew members were a captive audience, since there was no other sources for things like clothes, tools or tobacco. The cost of items was therefore often substantially higher than it would have been on land, and some whalers finished voyages in debt.
