William Martin was one of over fifty whaling captains of color known to have been masters of whaling vessels during the period from 1784 to 1926 (of the thousands of whaling masters known). Depictions of these captains are scarce, but modern portraits of two, by artist Elizabeth Whelan, are featured below. For more information, see Whaling Captains of Color by Skip Finley*.

Amos Jeffers, Jr. participated in six whaling voyages between 1835 and 1844. He was appointed captain of the whaling vessel Mary in 1847, but he died in a fishing accident shortly before his first voyage as captain was due to begin.

Joseph Belain was a Native American whaleman who spent over fifty years at sea hunting whales. The Belains were a multi-generational whaling family, with members of the family participating in the industry as early as 1805.
